Obituary for Colonel Daniel Thomas Sanders, MD

Doctor Daniel Thomas Sanders was born August 9, 1934 to the late James William Sanders and Erie McCarty Sanders in DeRidder, Louisiana. He knew early on that he wanted to serve others in the medical profession. During his time at University, Tom met the love of his life, Gay New. They were wed December 30, 1954 in Lafayette, Louisiana. After completing his Undergraduate degree, he fulfilled his dream when he graduated from Louisiana State University (LSU) with a Doctorate of Medicine in 1960.

Dr. Sanders joined the United States Army on July 4, 1960. He completed an Aerospace Medicine residency and served as a flight surgeon throughout his career in the military. He is a veteran of the Vietnam War. Dr. Sanders retired as a Colonel with full distinction on September 30, 1980. During his 20 years of service, Doctor Sanders was awarded: The Air Medal, The Meritorious Service Medal, and two Legion of Merit Medals.

After serving in the Army, Dr. Sanders embarked on his next full career. He returned to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport to complete a residency in Anesthesiology. He continued to work, serving the people of Shreveport and later Ville Platte, Louisiana. His medical career spanned 50 years.

During his youth, he was active in Boy Scouts, and attained the rank of Eagle. Dr Sanders was an avid whistler and a much more avid LSU football fan. He was an automobile lover, and read widely about any and all makes and models. Test driving new models was a favorite leisure activity, as was maintaining his vehicles. He was a faithful member of the Church, holding many callings and serving throughout his life. He loved music of many genres. All of his grandchildren and great grandchildren have memories of his kindness and gentle manner.

Dr Sanders is preceded in death by both his parents as well as his brothers James William Sanders II and Jack Robert Sanders. He is survived by his wife, Gay New Sanders, their children (Melanie, Pamela, Tracy, Daniel, Dawn, Karl), 19 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren. Daniel Thomas Sanders was a man of character, dedication, hard work, service, faith, kindness, and love.
