Obituary for Colonel (Ret) Ronald J. Beretta

COL (Ret) Ronald Joseph Beretta, 82, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on May 1, 2018. He was born in Bedford, Indiana, on June 27, 1935, to Bruno and Gertrude (Endris) Beretta.

Ronald married Wanda Ann Mize in 1954 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Bedford, Indiana; they had 8 children together.

Ronald was a very caring, compassionate, and thoughtful man. He always had a positive outlook on life. He was faced with several health issues for many years, which began in 1985 and continued until his passing. He persevered through it all, never complaining and maintaining his strong faith. He was our hero and will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.

Ronald retired as a full Colonel from the National Guard in 1990 with 36 years of service. Upon his retirement, he assisted in researching and writing Indiana’s Longest Arm. He also worked part time for his sons’ business, Beretta Brothers.

Ronald was very religious and a devoted Catholic. He was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church for over 50 years where he served as an usher, was a member of the Building Committee, was on the Education Board, helped out at the summer festivals, as well as many other volunteer positions.

Ronald's hobbies included wood carving, writing poetry, golfing, and traveling with his wife; however, his greatest joy was spending time with his family.

Ronald is survived by his wife, Wanda, of 63 years, and 7 children, Gregory, Timothy (Susan), Kimberly (Chris) Dolne, Deborah (Paul) Dodson, Mark (Lisa), Anthony, and Matthew (Kelli), 15 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren, two brothers, Philip (Mary) and Victor (Marilyn), and one sister, Rita (Bob) Screen.

Along with his parents, Ronald was preceded in death by an infant son, Jeffrey Allen, and a sister, Jacqueline Jean Dwyer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, May 7, 2018 at St. Jude Catholic Church, 5353 McFarland Road, with visitation from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass at church. He will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to St. Jude Catholic Church or St. Elizabeth’s Home.
