Obituary for Dorothy E. Maschmeyer

Dorothy E. Maschmeyer (Egger), passed away peacefully on November 29th on her 97th birthday. Born in 1920 in Indianapolis to Ernest and Wanda Egger, she graduated Valedictorian in 1938 from Emmerich Manual High School receiving her B.S. in Education from Indiana University. She and husband James were members of Pleasant Run United Church of Christ for over 50 years. Dottie was a loving wife to her Jim and, despite being an independent woman, was proud to be by his side in life and in business at Maschmeyer’s Nursery. She was a doting, but no non-sense mother to children Elsa, James R. and Anne. As a grandmother, she made sure that Nathan, Kirsten, Jonathan and Alison spoke politely and with correct grammar while plying them with homemade cookies and English toffee. She was fiercely loyal to her family and was always there when a loved one was in need.

As a frequent substitute teacher, PTA President and Alumni Association President at Manual High School, Dorothy backed down from no one and held all of her students to a high standard. Among many interests, Dottie enjoyed traveling the world with Jim, singing in the church choir, watching Indiana Basketball, reading, sewing, going to the symphony, listening to jazz, classical and big band music, playing the piano, volunteering her time, and sunning herself on the dock at Coldwater Lake.

A staunch Democrat with strong moral fiber, she was a suffragette to the core; encouraging women to vote whether volunteering at the polls or as a member of the League of Women Voters. Dorothy served on boards at Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (ISO), Aspen Music School, Fine Arts Society, Indianapolis Arts Chorale, Fountain Square Girls Club, Girls Club of Greater Indianapolis and Daughters of the Union. She was a 4-H leader and member of the Indianapolis Public Schools’ Community Desegregation Council. Dorothy was a founding member of ISO’s South Group Women’s Committee and was awarded their Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001.

Grandma Dot was preceded in death by her parents Ernest and Wanda, husband James A. and daughter Elsa. She is survived by son, James R. Maschmeyer (Dianna), daughter Anne Maschmeyer (Deah), grandchildren Nathan Iverson (Meg), Kirsten Felts (Tony), Jonathan Maschmeyer (Erika), Alison Maschmeyer (Guy) and eight, but soon to be ten great grandchildren.
