Obituary for Joy D. Garrett

Joy D. Garrett, 82, of Indianapolis passed away on March 4, 2018.  Joy was born on April 20, 1935 in Indianapolis to the late Omar Tyson and Thelma (Grider) Chekoff.

Joy graduated from Ben Davis High School in 1953.  She was a homemaker and stayed at home with her girls while they were young but was involved in their lives through service to the school while serving as room mother and President of the PTA.  She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Christian Church and taught Sunday School and coordinated VBS.  She was a member of Job’s Daughters and the Eastern Star where she served as Worthy Matron.  Joy served her community as well and worked at the voting polls for many years.  She was a past president of the IU Cheer Guild and was involved in the opening of the Ronald McDonald House in Indianapolis.  Through her involvement at the Cheer Guild she was recruited by the late Ronald Hamaker, MD to work for him as a nursing assistant at the offices of CENTA.  She was much loved by all the doctors and nurses but the patients most of all.  Joy will most be remembered for her love for her husband, children and grandchildren.

Joy enjoyed watching her grandchildren in all activities especially sports.  She was a fan of Indy Car Racing, the Indianapolis Colts and her beloved Braves. She was a dancer as a child and loved to dance and sing.  She had a beautiful smile and warm demeanor that people gravitated to and her name described her perfectly, JOY.  The world lost a wonderful woman and heaven received a Joyful Angel!

Survivors include her loving children, Cathy Garrett, Cindy (Stephen, deceased) Farley, Caren (Bill) Tucker, CeAnn (Richard) Willis, Mary Beth Campbell (David), and Chris (Steven) Lowder; 11 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and sisters Mary , Helen and brother Jim. She was preceded in death by her sister, Joann.

Memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 from 4:00-7:00 pm at G.H. Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home, 5141 Madison Avenue, Indianapolis, with a Celebration of Life Service from 5:00-5:30 pm.  Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.ghherrmann.com.  Memorial contributions may be made to the National Alzheimer’s Association.
