Obituary for Robert J Zaepfel

Robert J. Zaepfel passed away peacefully at his home on July 23, 2018, surrounded by his family.

Bob was born on December 17, 1944 to Robert A. Zaepfel and Mary Francis (Vollmer) Zaepfel Glant. He attended St. Christopher’s grade school and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1962. He attended Purdue University. He was employed by GM for over 30 years, working primarily for General Motors at Allison’s in Indianapolis. He was in the Army reserves from 1967 to 1971. He loved all forms of auto racing, and attended the Indianapolis 500 for over 50 years without missing a race. He enjoyed traveling to NASCAR races, as well. He spent his time fishing, hunting, golf, spending time with friends and family, especially his grandkids. He built and competed in model airplane contests in his youth. As an adult, he enjoyed building and racing model boats, and was a member of the Indiana Model Boat Club, racing primarily on the west side at The Waterfront, but also at venues around the state.

He was introduced to his eventual wife Sharon (Popplewell) by his best friend David Rike and Kathy (Cleary) Rike on a blind date. They were married on February 21, 1970, and were married for over 48 years. He is survived by his wife, Sharon, daughters Julie (Jason) Large of Plymouth and Leigh Ann Zaepfel of Oklahoma City, two grandchildren Brenna Large and Andrew Large. He is also survived by his brother William (Patty) Zaepfel of Indianapolis. Also surviving is Lisa Zaepfel of Speedway. He was preceded in death by his parents, and by his sister Patricia S. Zaepfel.

Visitation will be held from 4-8:00 PM on Friday, July 27 at G.H. Herrmann Greenwood Funeral Home at The Gardens at Olive Branch, 1605 S. State Road 135, Greenwood. The Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 28 at Our Lady of the Greenwood Catholic Church, 335 S. Meridian Street, Greenwood. He will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America, 375 Kings Highway North Cherry Hill, New Jersey 08034 or to Heart to Heart Hospice Foundation, 7240 Chase Oaks Blvd, Plano TX 75025.
