Obituary for David Kent Miller

David Kent Miller, aged 86, a resident of University Heights Health and Living Community, passed away peacefully with beloved family at his side on December 30, 2018.  David was born in Indianapolis on June 29, 1932 to Fred and Dorotha Rae (Sutherlin) Miller.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister June Schulmeyer, brother Fred Keith Miller and best friend William "Bill" Failey, Sr.

Survivors include sister, Jane (Bob) Anderson of Swannanoa, NC; sister-in-law, Pauline Miller of Indianapolis; cousin, Patty (Sam) Cole of Indianapolis; aunt, Sarah Killen of Lakeland, FL; good friend, Patty Failey of Indianapolis; "honorary" nephew, William (Brooke) Failey, Jr. of Grand Rapids, MI; "honorary" niece, Abigail Failey of Indianapolis; niece and caregiver of 6+ years, Carol Miller Lipps of Indianapolis; nieces, Cynthia (Josh) Vandivier of Indianapolis, Susan (Tom) Bean of Kalamazoo, MI, Anne Sutherlin of Olympia, WA and Beth Brady of Clearwater, FL.  Nephews, Eric (Julie) Miller of Columbus, IN and Pete Anderson of Swannonoa, NC.  David also leaves behind a host of friends, acquaintances, fellow residents and staff at University Heights who were like a family to him, as well as his favorite canine friends: Flash, Grace and Schatzi.

David enjoyed all types of auto racing and spent many hours at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He was a veteran, having served in the Army, Navy and Air Force.  On October 21, 2017, David was among a group of veterans on Honor Flight #25 to Washington, D.C.  According to David, the Honor Flight was the "best thing he'd done in 25 years".  He was a proud veteran and patriot.  After military service, David used his talents in many ways.  He was a tool & die maker, a counselor at Goodwill Industries and finally, a groundskeeper at Ft. Harrison in Indianapolis.  He had a generous spirit and was always up for an adventure, whether it be taking a trip to the "country", Putnam County, Indiana or hanging out at his favorite haunt, Schneider's on the southside of Indy.  Some of David's favorite things were Fannie May candy, corned beef from Shapiro's, Hooter's girls, Lil Bub and Long's donuts, not necessarily in that order.

His favorite place in the world was in Harbor Springs, MI, where he spent many happy days and made precious memories at the summer home of his best friend, Bill with his family.  He helped raised Billy and Abby and they hold a very special place in his heart as do their children; Noah, Isabel, Finnegan and Victoria.

A memorial visitation will be held on Sunday, January 13, 2019 from 12:00 pm until the time of service at 2:00 pm at G.H. Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home, 5141 Madison Avenue, Indianapolis.
