Obituary for Janice Mansbury

Janice Elaine Mansbury , age 91, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 28, 2018. She was born on July 10, 1927 in Starke County, Indiana to the late Orien and Martha Gardner
Jan attended LaPorte County Elementary School and Union Mills High School (class of 1945) before attending Purdue University, receiving a degree in Home Ec and Teaching in 1950. She taught both Home Ec and English for many years, making sure her own children did not drop participles or end a sentence with a preposition.
Jan’s family were her passion and delight. She grew up, the baby of the family, through the Great Depression, working on a family farm with her five siblings. On March 20, 1954, she married a charmer Edward Mansbury, a city boy who had to learn to appreciate life on a farm. The couple lived in LaPorte, Indiana, raising their two children, Jill and Jon, before moving to Indianapolis where they lived the rest of their lives.
Throughout her life, she and Ed enjoyed fishing vacations with family in Minnesota and Canada, playing bridge and pinochle with friends, and later in life traveling extensively internationally.
A Die Hard Cubs Fan (she was a card carrying member for several years), she lived to see the Cubbies win a World Series and continued to cheer for them. She rarely missed watching Purdue play football or basketball on TV.
She lived an active life with friends, playing in bowling leagues and monthly bridge games, and continued to follow politics and sports right to the end. Her passing was peaceful and the family is grateful that she was able to live life independently and engaged in her community.
Jan is survived by her children, Jill Jansen (husband Joe), Jon Mansbury, brother Kenneth Gardner, two grandchildren Scott Jansen (wife Mandy) and Laura Jansen, her great grandson, Kaden, and a number of other loving relatives and close friends. She was Granny Janny to Kaden and loved the times she got to see him.
Her wish of an intimate burial and funeral with a simple graveside service at the family plot at Union Mills Cemetery, 3500 W 800 S, Union Mills Indiana is being honored and will be held on Saturday, December 1 at 1:00..  Memorial contributions may be made to Tracy United Methodist Church, 1702 U.S. 6 and 35, Hamlet, Indiana 46532 or the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.ghherrmann.com
