Obituary for Phyllis J. Stansbury

Phyllis Joan Cramer Stansbury passed into heaven on November 19, 2018.  Phyllis was born on July 31, 1930 to Earl & Edna (Groseclose) Cramer in Southport, Indiana.
She was the youngest of three girls, older sisters Doris and Dorothy, whom she dearly loved her whole life.

At the age of 14 she met Robert “Bob” Stansbury at Southport Baptist Church after he pulled a chair out from behind her.  It started a love affair that would last til her final day.  He was a Navy man and 4 years her senior.  They fell in love and with her daddy’s permission, they were married July 6, 1947— just shy of her 17th birthday.  The love and devotion between them was rare and special.  They settled on the Southside of Indianapolis on Mills Avenue and lived there until 1970, when they built their dream home on Corey Drive in Southport.  Together Bob and Phyllis would have 5 children, 4 boys and 1 girl. Their children were their life and greatest accomplishment.  She was so proud of each of them.

While raising her children, she was a nurses aid at St. Francis Hospital and drove a school bus for Perry Township Schools.  She would also reupholster furniture to help contribute.  She had many talents and used them to help support and teach her children the value of hard work.  In 1978 she stopped driving the school bus and started a new business, Southport Dog Grooming—she loved animals and dogs.

Phyllis and Bob relished their role as grandparents with large get togethers and Christmas celebrations.  She cherished her grandkids.  Phyllis and Bob became snowbirds, spending several winter months in Florida until they decided to sell their Indiana home and reside permanently in Hudson, Florida in 2004.

Phyllis was a nurturing and honest soul with a heart for others.  She had many hobbies, could tell you the name of most any flower, loved music and played the piano.  She will be remembered for her wonderful cooking, homemade apple rolls, her beautiful crocheted afghans and baby blankets, her penmanship, and her collections of Fiesta Ware, Barbies, dolls, and much more. She was a lifelong member of Southport Baptist Church.  If you knew her, you can certainly hear her singing Jesus Loves Me or Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah.  A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend - she will be so, so missed for so many reasons.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Edna Cramer, her sister Doris Cramer, and one grandson, Christopher.

She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Robert; her children, Robert, Jean Ann (Greg), Mark (Bonnie), Brad (Anita), and Bryan (Cindy); her sister, Dorothy Maffit; brother, Edward (Margie) Wolfe; her many grandchildren; great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 29, 2018 from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM at G. H. Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home, 5141 Madison Avenue, Indianapolis, IN. A funeral service will be conducted on Friday at 11:30 AM.

Phyllis will be laid to rest in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Greenwood, IN.
