Obituary for Joseph "Joe" Baughn

Joe was born on March 29, 1943, in Columbia City, Indiana, to the late Winston Reece Baughn and the late Martha Hauser Baughn. He grew up in New Castle, Indiana. He graduated from Walter Chrysler Memorial High School in 1961 and Ball State University in 1966 with a major in English and minors in journalism and social science. Joe taught school for two years then accepted a full time position with Citizens State Bank in New Castle where he worked for about a year. He then began a 30 year career in the nail and staple industry working for Stanley-Bostitch. For the last 7 1/2 years he was a volunteer with the Southport Police Department where he was an honorary Police Officer and a Public Assistance Officer. This was the greatest honor in his professional career. He worked with three wonderful officers, Chief Vaughn, Assistant Chief Curl, and Major Ford. They treated him with the greatest respect and he always remembered them for their kindness, especially during his illness.

Joe was a Master of Prospect Masonic Lodge in 1979. He was a member of Southport Lodge # 270 and Williamsburg Lodge # 6, Williamsburg, VA. (located on the fringe of Colonial Williamsburg, one of his two favorite places in the world). Joe and Sandy are members of the Goodwin Society at Colonial Williamsburg. The other is Culver, Indiana, where they have a second home and Joe served on the Board of Directors for the Culver Historical Society.

Joe was preceded in death by a half-brother, James Stamm, a brother James Baughn, and his sister Jane Ward Baughn Solida and his late brother in law, David Solida, nephew Stephen Michael Kawalek, maternal grandparents James E. and Fay Markle Hauser, paternal grandparents Lauren and Anna Baughn, and his late in-laws, James and Ada May, and step-father, Dr. Robert Rogers.

Joe is survived by his wife of almost 49 years (October 18, 1969), the rock and foundation of the family who did a wonderful job raising their two sons, Andrew and James, both college graduates, good fathers, successful in their careers, husbands, and well respected in their communities. He is also survived by two daughters in law, Christine Baughn and Allison Baughn (a tremendous support during his illness because she is an RN), and five grandchildren, Joshua, James, Kellen, David, and Ellie, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Judy and Gary Kawalek, and a great-nephew, Cameron Solida.

Favorite Color: Blue.

Favorite food: Hamburger (with extra onion) and french fries.

Favorite Singers: Johnny Mathis, followed closely by Lou Rawls and Bing Crosby.

Favorite Songs: Memory from Cats, White Christmas by only Bing Crosby, and Bing's duet with David Bowe of Little Drummer Boy.

Favorite Animal: Tiger!

Favorite Sports Team: He was a long suffering fan on the Cincinnati Reds dating back to the 1950's.

Favorite Athlete: Ted Kluszewski, first baseman for the Reds.
